So, you may have heard this term before, you may even be aware of what CPR is, but the vast majority of people lack a holistic appreciation of the key concepts involved in delivering Basic Life Support in its entirety, of which CPR is just one of.
Due to the very nature of sports, the risk of cardiac or other types of arrest and sudden death can be higher than in the general population as most times in sports people push themselves to go beyond natural limits to achieve extraordinary things. Thankfully, the human body has great capacity to enable us succeed in achieving extraordinary things. Unfortunately, this isn’t without risk and when it comes to situations requiring Basic Life Support such risks are unpredictable as they’re not based on you or your family health status, although in some cases this could make you more prone to having an arrest. You see cardiac and other types of arrest frequently occur in otherwise fit, young and healthy individuals at unpredictable times.
In the sports setting, certain sports activities can increase the risks of an arrest leading to premature deaths in settings usually considered safe. Thus, learning what and how to support people in various death threatening situations when training or competing should be an essential skill for anybody operating in a sports setting. With most basic life courses costing less than £40 (~ N40K) or so and some such as our being less than half of that, it is an affordable skill to develop. A word of caution here, though there are free courses available which are great for awareness purposes, I would advise doing a paid one that you can afford under supervision to ensure you do it right. Delivering Basic Life Support is a Medical Procedure, which may cause more damage than good if done incorrectly. In addition, there are often updates that regularly come up and you should constantly be aware of. That’s why it shouldn’t just be a one-off training either. Yearly refreshers are recommended worldwide to ensure the ‘victim’ has the best chance of surviving, and surviving without any lasting ill effects. The cost of getting the skill and delivering it should the need arise is far more cost effective than trying to transport someone to a hospital or paying for a medical intervention that may not even work due to the time delay. Dealing with a Cardiac or other type of arrest is a medical emergency where the consequences of delaying an intervention by minutes can be the difference between life and death. Similarly, delivering it incorrectly can also lead to long lasting issues.
